Home & Away (Home Exhibition)

VVAI (2021)
Ashleigh Taupaki and Jasmine Tuiā

Shown in Jasmine's bedroom in West Auckland.
Home & Away explores line-making and cartography - the mapping of place and memory according to the collectives experiences as Māori and as Pasifika.
Tuiā moved to Aotearoa at the age of 12 and it is here that she learned her art practices. This idea of “away” is significant in her practice, and drives her passion for her aiga and fanua in Samoa. Taupaki grew up here and her whakapapa lies in the Hauraki region. Despite growing up in West Auckland, she knows that her tūrangawaewae is in the marshes and coasts of Hauraki, alongside her tūpuna. Both artists use materials to map out those faraway homes.
